Donating Double Reds

Automated collection is a donation procedure that allows the donor to "double their giving" by donating two units of red cells at one time, thus providing larger volumes of blood for patient therapy. Donors make a greater impact on the blood supply with fewer visits to a donor center or mobile site; a great benefit for less frequent donors who may not be able to give regularly.

The technology utilizes a centrifuge that spins and separates the blood into the desired red cell components. A machine housing a sterile centrifuge takes blood from the donor through a small needle connected to tubing. The blood is then drawn by a series of pumps into the centrifuge, which spins and separates it into the desired components.

Automation provides donors with more comfort and convenience because:

  • there are fewer visits to the Blood Center
  • there are fewer needle sticks
  • there are fewer telemarketing calls
  • a smaller needle is used and the fluid replacement keeps donors better hydrated, so the donation experience is more comfortable

The donation time does increase, because two products are being collected; however, at the very most, the entire visit to the Blood Center will only take about 10 to 20 minutes longer than previous whole blood donation visits.

Extensive clinical trials and field studies have shown that automated procedures are equivalent to or safer than traditional whole blood procedures. As with regular whole blood donations, all equipment is sterile, used only once, then discarded.
