About Blood: Blood Safety

The Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center is also concerned about your safety, and adheres to guidelines known as "universal precautions". The following protective measures are in place to ensure that your donation experience is as safe as possible.

  • Utilize prepackaged sterilized needles and disposable blood collection bags. These items are used only once, then destroyed.
  • Wear gloves when indicated for donor contact and all patient treatments.
  • Wash or disinfect hands before and between donors. We change gloves whenever they have come in contact with blood.
  • Properly disposing of waste items and contaminated materials in specially designed and designated waste receptacles.
  • Clean and disinfect donor area surfaces (donor beds, countertops, trays and carts) and non-disposable equipment (hemostats, handgrips, tourniquets, and scissors) daily or immediately following exposure to any foreign substance.

If you prefer that the person drawing your blood wear gloves, please feel free to request; we will be happy to oblige.

Blood donation remains one of the safest of all medical procedures. You run a far greater risk of injury driving to the donor site than you do by giving blood. More importantly, patients who receive your generous gift rely on you for, in some cases, their lives. The Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center does everything in its power to maximize safety for patients and donors alike. If you have questions or concerns about the donation experience, call the Blood Center at 563-359-5401 or 800-747-5401. You are encouraged to confidentially discuss your concerns with a Blood Center nurse.
