Acting as a sounding board for ideas and providing insights into Hispanic culture and customs, the Hispanic Council, formed in 2001, is helping the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center reach non-English speaking and reading donors. Their efforts are increasing the Hispanic communityŐs understanding of the need for blood donors and the donation process. The voluntary advisory board meets on an as-needed basis, and is made up of a cross section of individuals from the business, education, community and non-profit sectors.
Outreach efforts are based on educational programs in schools and the community. In middle school and high school grade levels, programs are taught to build the knowledge base and challenge the students to become donors. The Blood Center also works with younger children in educating and making them aware of blood through puppet shows and other school venues.
