Over the past three weeks, the Blood Center has been forced to cancel dozens of blood drives (68, and counting) leading to a loss of more than 2200 donations due to record cold tempatures, snow, and ice.
If you are able to safely travel to donate blood this week, please do. To find a donation location near you, call (800) 747-5401, visit www.bloodcenterimpact.org, or use the Blood Center’s IMPACT mobile app.
With another winter storm on the way to portions of our service region, we will continue to provide information on the impact of winter weather at www.bloodcenter.org/weather.
What is Blood Management?
Blood Management is a process that is designed to promote the optimal use of blood products. The end-result of optimal use is a safer, appropriate transfusion every time in every patient transfused.
The safety benefits of such rigor are becoming increasingly well documented as more and more experts have become concerned about the known and emerging risks of transfusion. Efficient use of blood products has resource saving benefits for hospitals. If left unchecked, increasing U.S. blood use will outpace donations and impact patients and limited healthcare dollars even more.
The Blood Management Program is a consultative service provided to hospitals served by MVRBC at no cost. The MVRBC Blood Management team is comprised of experienced professionals who will consult with your hospital and recommend an individualized plan for identifying and eliminating unnecessary blood use. Educational support is provided to enhance program outcomes.Click here to read our Blood Management Handout.
