FEEL-GOOD NEWS

Everyday Heroes For Life: First Responders

Wednesday was National First Responders Day but every day we're grateful for the Heroes For Life who support our region’s blood supply as well as the emergency medical services (EMS) teams who carry the lifesaving power of blood directly to the scene of a 911 call.

From ground ambulances to medical helicopters, prehospital transfusion programs are changing the standard of emergency care before patients even reach the hospital. By integrating whole blood and red blood cell components directly onto ground ambulances and medical helicopters, prehospital transfusion programs bridge the critical gap between the scene of a 911 call and hospital arrival. When severe hemorrhaging occurs from motor vehicle crashes, agricultural accidents, or medical emergencies, having blood on board means life-saving transfusions can begin within minutes rather than hours later.

Today, we proudly partner with 29 emergency medical service (EMS) providers representing ground and air ambulance teams based in Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, and Wisconsin.

Hawkeyes Bleed Black & Gold

Hawkeye pride was on full display this week during Homecoming week as 18 students at the University of Iowa rolled up their sleeves to support the Abbott and Big Ten We Give Blood challenge! The two-day campus blood drive this past week brought together Hawkeyes who wanted to make a difference for patients while helping their school compete against other Big Ten universities.

Right now, the Hawks are in fourth place in the competition for a million dollars that will go to the school with the most donations by December 4. You can help your favorite school win when you give blood, snap a selfie, and submit it online at bigten.org/abbott/submit. You'll also get a limited-edition T-shirt!

Every donor could be giving the next lifesaving transfusion given to the patients at Stead Family Children's Hospital to make sure they see the next Hawkeye Wave. That’s how we Bleed Black & Gold!

Partners for Life: PanCAN

November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month, and we're partnering with Pancreatic Cancer Action Network to raise awareness and encourage our communities to take action in support of patients facing serious health challenges.

Blood donors help ensure lifesaving blood products are available for patients who need them. This November, you can make a difference in two ways: book an appointment at one of our donor centers or mobile drives through bloodcenter.org/pancan and make your donation go even further by supporting PanCAN through our Good Giving program!

Every donation helps Put Good into the World!

In the spirit of witching you a Happy Halloween, Davenport Donor Recruitment hosted our 2nd Trunk-or-Treat at Headquarters last Saturday! Because all ghouls just want to have fun, we brought staff and their families together to have a frightfully fang-tastic event with treats and fun activities for the fabulous little boos to participate in!

Extra thanks to our skeleton crew for a humerus time by helping set up and decorating their trunks to pass out candy:

  • Cheryl Bixby, Recruiter, Donor Recruitment
  • Jade Ditto, Manager, Integrative Clinical Services
  • Lynne Flores, Supervisor, Donor Recruitment
  • MariaElena Martinez, Employee Engagement Coordinator, Human Resources
  • Mick Bruce
  • Sherry Stark

We are also truly grateful to all of those who donated treats and candy to this event as well as all who came to visit! THANK YOU!

Thank the Donor

"My dad needed blood post lung cancer surgery and this blood saved him. Thank you so much!"

The work you do every day makes this all possible. Every unit of red blood cells that goes out the door to our hospital partners has a green heart tag on it, letting patients know about our Thank the Donor initiative. Our IMD team makes that happen.

Thank the Donor is an online portal where patients and their caregivers can go to send messages of Appreciation to the person whose blood they are actually receiving. It's a powerful tool that puts a face to the patient on the other side of the blood donation.
