ImpactLife is among 12 blood providers across the country that have been asked to ship blood components in an activation of the Blood Emergency Readiness Corps that was called today (Friday, June 12, 2026). This is in response to a mass shooting with multiple wounded patients that took place on June 12 in Midland, Texas.
Media reports describe a mass shooting that took place at a collision center in Midland beginning at approximately 8 a.m. central time. One person is reported to have been killed and more than 10 wounded in the shooting. Law enforcement personnel cleared the area and deployed armored units to the scene, and a standoff ensued until the suspect was confirmed as deceased and officials declared the situation had ended after 11 a.m.
Multiple patients were taken to Midland Memorial Hospital, the nearest hospital to the scene. The blood provider for Midland Memorial Hospital is Vitalant, a member of Blood Emergency Readiness Corps (BERC). Blood providers that are "on call" for a BERC activation on Friday, June 12 are supporting blood inventory needs in the region by shipping additional units of red blood cells. The Type O red blood cells will help recover inventory sent in response to the shooting.
Vitalant has issued the following statement after Friday’s shooting.
We are deeply saddened by the deadly shooting in Midland. Our thoughts are with the victims, their families and the community.
Vitalant sent more than 65 blood products to area hospitals treating victims and stands ready to send more upon request. It was the blood generously donated in the days and weeks prior that potentially helped save lives today.
Blood donations are needed every day, and we encourage all who are eligible to contribute to the community blood supply by making an appointment to give in the coming days and weeks.
BERC was established to help blood providers meet immediate transfusion needs when faced with a large-scale emergency. Through BERC, blood centers commit to collecting extra units on a rotating “on call” schedule to create an available supply of blood for emergency needs. The BERC network helps ensure blood centers’ ability to meet emerging needs without delay or uncertainty.
