Over the past three weeks, the Blood Center has been forced to cancel dozens of blood drives (68, and counting) leading to a loss of more than 2200 donations due to record cold tempatures, snow, and ice.
If you are able to safely travel to donate blood this week, please do. To find a donation location near you, call (800) 747-5401, visit www.bloodcenterimpact.org, or use the Blood Center’s IMPACT mobile app.
With another winter storm on the way to portions of our service region, we will continue to provide information on the impact of winter weather at www.bloodcenter.org/weather.
Thirty-one percent of the population is A-Positive, making it one of the blood types transfused most often. Depending on hospital demand, A+ donors could be needed to donate platelets or whole blood. Platelets are in high demand by hospitals because they help cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and premature babies. In the case of an emergency, doctors often do not have time to determine the blood type of the patient and will depend on type A and AB plasma for trauma patients and accident victims. Ask a blood center representative which donation method is preferred to help meet hospital need.Click here to download the A Positive Blood Type Informational Rack Card.
