Type AB+ is one of the rarest types with only 3% of the population sharing this blood type. This type is the universal recipient because it can receive blood from anyone. AB+ donors are also universal platelet and plasma donors because these components can be transfused into any patient, regardless of the recipient’s blood type. AB+ donors are encouraged to donate platelets or plasma. Ask a blood center representative which donation method is preferred to help meet hospital need. In the case of an emergency, doctors often do not have time to determine the blood type of the patient and will depend on type A and AB plasma for trauma patients and accident victims.Click here to download the AB Positive Blood Type Informational Rack Card.
