Over the past three weeks, the Blood Center has been forced to cancel dozens of blood drives (68, and counting) leading to a loss of more than 2200 donations due to record cold tempatures, snow, and ice.
If you are able to safely travel to donate blood this week, please do. To find a donation location near you, call (800) 747-5401, visit www.bloodcenterimpact.org, or use the Blood Center’s IMPACT mobile app.
With another winter storm on the way to portions of our service region, we will continue to provide information on the impact of winter weather at www.bloodcenter.org/weather.
When Austin was five, he was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer called Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma. His courageous fight over the next year and a half included two tumor resections, two rounds of radiation and numerous rounds of chemotherapy. When his platelet levels dropped dangerously low during this aggressive treatment, platelet transfusions were needed and were available because of donors like you.
Austin passed away in May of 2016. His legacy lives on through the Austin Strong Foundation, and in January his family is hosting a blood drive so that other families can be helped by the gift of blood. His dad Britt is Chief of Police in Monticello and his godfather Nick Kahler is a Monticello firefighter, so the two departments will face off in the Boots vs. Badges blood drive, to see which can recruit the most donors.
